The Volunteer
“You’ve got a msg, you’ve got a msg;” rang my handphone. I picked up my phone and scroll to read the incoming msg. Oh..it was my ex church mate asking if I would like to help out at her workplace, a students counselling ctr.
That was 2 months ago. Initially my duties were mainly to assist my former church mate with some simple admin e.g.: typing, filing… soon it expanded to helping other staff at the ctr with whatever they need. Guess I made myself useful there hehe.. therefore my scope of work expanded, now even include assist a staff in her tuition class and one to one coaching of 2 primary school kid. (All the kids in the ctr come to be either counselled or be given tuition or both)
I’ll go into more details about my job scope as a volunteer. Usually when we talk about being a volunteer, we will think it’s helping out @ children’s homes, old folks homes etc. but for me it’s very different. As I said earlier besides basic admin duties I also assist teach and do one 2 one coaching to children. For assisting the main teacher (ctr staff giving tuition to gps of children), I helped children when they encounter difficulties/problems in the course of the tuition. I go around checking if the kids need any help with their work. I dun give the answer, instead I give clues/ hints or throw them some questions to stimulate their thinking. That helped them to find the answers by themselves. I’m just a facilitator. For the one to one coaching, the staff in-charge will hand me some worksheets to let the designated boy to do. I’m to guide the boy along.
The ctr staff are rather harmonious, loving group. You can feel the respect and concern they have for one another. This is evident in the 2 farewell parties for their colleagues they organised and the CNY steamboat potluck @ office. Laughter of joy can be heard and seen. Even in a typical working day, u can feel and see the coordinal relationships they have built. They are nice people who invited this volunteer to join in their lunches and parties @ workplace. Their boss, the ctr director is sft-spoken yet nonetheless very capable.
Regained or should I say my self-worthiness increased as I worked there.
