A Singaporean Favourite... No longer just eaten @ breakfast or tea time, it's a lunch time meal for many & even dinner for some.

The main ingredients are eggs, sugar & coconut. What are we talking about? Kaya! There are 2 main kinds: The Pandan & the Nonya. Now there's even Orange Kaya, kaya that is infused with orange.

Here's a review of 5 different Kaya Toast stalls.

Ah Mei Kaya Toast

The newest kid among the 5, it's located at Paragon, B1. There's 3 different sets to chose from. The Thick Toast with eggs & tea or coffee, The Kaya Toast with eggs & tea or coffee, and the 2 Kaya Toast + Iced Milk Tea. I took the last combo.

The Kaya & butter spread were rather generous, The toast bread was still crispy to the last bite, even when I took my own sweet time. The Iced Milk Tea was a tad too sweet for my liking, but for those who craves for anything sweet, this is the one milk tea to try. Pricing is an attraction with each set at only $2.80.

Coffee & Toast

Situated at Raffles Place, OUB Centre, it's crowded with working adults during lunch time. There is the French Toast Set, The Kaya Toast Set to choose from. While not too generous on the Kaya & Butter, The kaya was rather smooth, you can smell the pandan. I drank the milk tea & the sweetness was ok.

Wang Jiao

I tried the branch at Bukit Panjang Plaza. Ordered the normal Kaya Toast Set with Ice Milk Tea. The Kaya tasted rich, the eggs was not under cooked. The Ice Milk Tea rather refreshing. Overall it was a not bad experience.

Killiney Kopitiam

Ordered the usual Kaya Toast with 2 eggs and milk tea set at their Upper Bukit Timah Branch. (Opp. Beauty World) The Kaya toast bread was sliced too thinly and the kaya spread was way too thin. Further more no frangrance of the Pandan leaves. According to my dad, the main branch or we call the headquarters at Killiney Rd is bagus, better than Ah Kun. (In his opinion) I've not tried it there, so can't comment.

Ya Kun Kaya Toast

They have many branches, Takashimaya, Bugis Junction, Raffles Hospital(Ground Flr) etc. Depends on which branch customers patronise, the Kaya amount differs, but the half-boiled eggs standard are the best among the rest. Why? It's egg whites are cooked till non transluent & you can see the the yolks arching out, yet it still maintains the trademark softness. Their Hot milk tea sweetness and tea taste is of the right balance. The Iced Teh C is refreshingly cool with the right mix of tea & evaporated milk.

Pricing is $3.20 per set. You can purchase their kaya home for a further kayalious toast spread.
